Shut up and listen to me, ok? This was fun. Queen Takes Knights by Joely Sue Burkhart is a dark, vampire, why choose romance. It is 190 pages, available on Kindle Unlimited, it is book 1 in the seemingly ongoing Their Vampire Queen series and I had a medium/high good time with it!

So Shara lost her parents when she was 17 - monsters killed them. Once the coast was clear, she made a break for it and has been on the run ever since. She is 22 now and bouncing into a new town every month to work for a little cash and hopefylly evade the monsters that still hunt her to this day. One night, 2 hot men burst from the trees and help her fight off a few monsters and they explain to her... some stuff about her destiny. I don't wanna give too much more away because I liked this and think if you're already intrigued, I don't want to spoil it for you.

I really liked the set up, I like that she isn't freshly 18. She is also strong, intuitive and has a lot of family drama which I am so excited to learn more about. I even like the guys, Alrik and Daire. They each have their own supernatural things going on too but I'm not telling you anything else. For now, just know they are only there to serve and protect her... among other things.

This book got so horny SO FAST too. This isn't a good or a bad thing really, just a thing. One minute she was in danger, the next minute - sex and desire and lust and blood everywhere. I don't dislike the sex scenes albeit there were a few weird phrases that popped up and almost ruined everything. "Oh. My. Fucking. Hot. Man. Alert." could've sent me over the edge in a shittier book but in this one, I let it go.

I also love that we have two men who were already loving on each other before she even showed up and we don't lose their relationship/intimacy once she comes into the fold.

Another thing that I really, really enjoyed and appreciated was the discussion of menstruation in here. I'd even go so far as to say her cycle is a pretty substational part of the plot in general. I hardly ever see periods depicted or discussed in vampire fiction which is silly because it is a reality of most people existing with a uterus. How does that just not come into play in a book about a monster who seeks out blood? Thankfully, we weren't left in the dark about it here, they discuss her period A LOT. TMI alert: I am currently on my period while reading it. Talk about immersive.

Not everything was good though; I have noted the occasional typo, misspelling and the fact that Shara doesn't seem to have the standard issue boobs like the rest of us. Her nipples get hard in the weirdest ways. _"Alrik's voice had gone smokey and low, making my nipples harden." _ _"Are you upset with me?" I leaned into him, pressing my bresasts against his arm. My nipples ached so surely he could feel how hard they were. "Does this feel like I'm upset with you?" _

Excuse me what? I don't know if my nips are just defective or what but I don't think that's the way nipples work? They get hard during sexual acts, sure. They also get hard when its cold outside or if you brush up against them and sometimes for no reason at all. I don't think that as soon as you are horny, they firm up. Maybe I am working with older models though, I digress.

All things considered (and adding in the vampire curve I grade on AND the fun I had) I liked this one more than I disliked it! **4 stars! **
